Venus Williams, 45, Awarded Wild Card for Her Initial Australian Open in Five Years.
A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.
A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park
Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Australian Summer
The tennis star had previously revealed in November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.
"I’m excited to return in the country and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Venus said. "I have experienced so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to return to a venue that has meant so much to my career."

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will represent the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Open's main draw, surpassing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
