This Diamond Family Unofficial Gaming of the Year Roundup for This Year
Well, what did you think of this year in your home? Could it be described as entirely positive as people post on social media? Packed with academic success for your offspring and riotous themed fancy dress birthday parties for the grownups? Or perhaps it was a swamp of frustration with only occasional fun highlights? And was any of it genuine, or is everyone now digitally altered virtual entities with perfect smiles?
I've assembled my thoughts for a chat, willing or unwilling, to debate the most important thing in any given year: what titles we played the most. Let's get started:
Release Eldest Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"This isn't my personal ranking."
On her phone, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "attempting to locate decent healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In reality."
Title Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He took umbrage that the question was posed. Point taken.
Release Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into acting, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her character has a successful utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her eldest sister has in real life.
Title the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and ended it at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Game I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Any time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he complains, I reply that I am engaging in this to build character so he can grow up and play games for mature audiences. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Skilled Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is a machine. More impressive than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted deck building wizard’s poker, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that frequently update their range is you eventually realize and realise it is all just an attempt to trap you with compulsion-based microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a legendary franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could dispatch my problems so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Puzzle-Focused Edition)
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just was short on the focused attention to give it what it required earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the wee small hours after family time.
Game That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was 2024’s surprise hit, but I was late to it. And it is incredible. It just gets absolutely everything right. Crazy Poker is a brilliant concept, but the effects behind the different special cards are so inventive it has become a game I could play any time. Throw in the wittiness of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Title I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I received a wave of criticism when I wrote about how a technical issue in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I valued even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I mention that as written, because I acknowledge the engagement, and they are obviously an astute judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a bastard-hard Metroidvania-esque thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". How delightful. I get that it looks ace and is flawless if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my current stage of life. I was around back when many games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming Controversy of 2025
Close call between questionable alliances that raised eyebrows, and expensive game releases. Both difficult to justify and repugnant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Crazy Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names called from the garden at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or phone use, but it aches like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
