The Young Spinner Earns Surprise Inclusion in England's Ashes Team
The English team has chosen a 12-man selection just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.
Bashir's inclusion indicates that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the initial match to determine whether the venue pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man squad, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the attack, with the latter most likely to be omitted if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Favor Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted several past matches.
In those games, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers is still the probable choice.
Spin Options Weighed
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to provide some spin while additionally strengthening the lower order.
But McCullum has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
