Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the league found that the Saints had incentivized players for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Latest Dispute

The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered remarks after Denver's remarkable comeback victory over the New York. The coach suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton implied that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Background of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million contract.
  • The team finished 4-11 in his first season before Denver hired Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in broadcasting.
  • Payton benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.

If Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the ugly breakup between the player and his coach.
