Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial names under consideration to replace the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday after the team's 10-match winless start to the Premier League campaign.
And both candidates - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are part of the options to be considered by the Wolves leadership.
Edwards is currently at another club, which would create a potential hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town manager - who played more than 100 of games for Wolves during his playing career - is considered a leading candidate for the position.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the club board as they start the process of hiring a new head coach.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected candidate, although he would be a surprising appointment given he was sacked by the club in the previous winter.
The former West Ham United player is currently unemployed meaning the club would not need to provide any compensation.
