The offspring of previous South African Leader Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror allegations at the beginning of her trial in the coastal city of Durban city.

The defendant, forty-three, is being prosecuted over remarks she published on digital networks in the past during fatal unrest in South Africa that followed the arrest of her father.

A period of chaos in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including looting and intentional burning, left at least 300 deceased and caused damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

The defendant has been charged of fuelling this violence and faces accusations of provocation to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.

Background of the Legal Matter

The demonstrations were centered in the provinces of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the ex-leader's arrest for ignoring a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an probe into accusations of graft while he was serving as president.

She has always denied the accusations against her, with her lawyer earlier describing the prosecution's case as unsubstantiated.

She has also consistently claimed the accusations against her were an effort to address political grievances with her parent after he established his own political party and competed against the ANC.

Support and Case Arguments

This was echoed by the foundation, which stated the case was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial harassment" against the previous head of state and his relatives.

A handful of supporters from her party, the political party, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other party leaders participated in the court sessions inside.

The defense has stated that the proof presented by government lawyers is insufficient and fails to provide substantial grounds for a criminal finding.

Main Aspects of the Case

  • Digital statements from 2019 form the core of the government's argument
  • Violent protests in 2021 resulted in substantial casualties and economic losses
  • The individual on trial is charged with multiple counts of incitement to violence
  • Court trials are anticipated to carry on for numerous weeks

The court case continues as both sides present their arguments before the judge in what is projected to be a highly monitored judicial process with substantial politically charged ramifications for South Africa.
