New York's next mayor affirms he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly after his victory in November.
"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters supported," Mamdani said on Monday.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community famous for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
During his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
However his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a space for official events, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria home.
With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
