Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing unwanted presents can be viewed as slightly impolite – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. The diverse haul could include objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, combined, are worth an estimated €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale to the highest bidder by a Rome-based auction firm. The specific date has not been finalized, but the aim is to hold the auction during the holiday season, with the revenue donated to non-profit organizations.

Storage Room Treasures

The items reportedly kept in a repository on the upper level of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away for years.

A complete inventory has not yet been officially released, but some insight emerged earlier this year when a comprehensive document of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The query focused on whether a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister must declare presents valued above €300.

An International Assortment of Presents

Among the items:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • An assortment including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.

Political Context

Meloni has been credited, mainly from her allies, with winning over international counterparts and making Italy as a significant player on the global scene once again.

This unique auction highlights a novel approach to handle the state presents that build up during a time in office.
