Israeli citizens commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace negotiations advance
Citizens have come together throughout the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"The aggressive opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the proposal.
A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the talks revealed that an late session of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The source explained the day's discussions finished without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the agreement.
He commented that the talks are "challenging and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Key Issues in Talks
- An enduring truce
- The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
- Post-war governance of the territory
Public Feeling
In the city's public square previously, young a woman - whose brother survived the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person return none of us will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home again, we can relax once more. Then we can start to recover," she continued.
Near the leader's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says 48 remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
Activist a participant stated: "We must do any agreement necessary for the captives to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of the population want the conflict to end in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the area of the music event, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.
From there, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli attacks continued.
In the main city, attacks were documented in the early hours of that day in the western district, sector and Nasr districts and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.
"When the evening comes, the fear comes with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who places his head on me all night."
"Every second we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."
Health Situation
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had accepted the corpses of six people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said two more dead people had been transported. A person was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get assistance to the southern area, health workers reported.
