I thought I edged it - Carey on DRS survival.
Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey admitted he thought he had edged the ball when he was reprieved on Decision Review System during day one of the 3rd Ashes Test versus England.
Following his reprieve on 72, Carey crafted a superb 106 to help the hosts finish on 326-8 at the end of play in Adelaide.
The Incident
Australia were 245-6 when Carey attempted a cut to the bowling of Josh Tongue.
England lodged a strong appeal, certain they had heard an edge, but on-field official Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.
Following skipper Ben Stokes referred the on-field call, the technology reviewed by third umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a significant spike but this registered before the ball had made contact with the bat.
Gaffaney added he believed there was a space between the bat and the ball.
Therefore, Carey was given not out.
"I felt a little noise as the ball went past," said Carey.
"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."
Controversial 'Snicko'
There has been debate about 'the Snickometer' throughout the series after a series of dubious incidents.
England's bowling coach David Saker indicated England may escalate this most recent incident to a higher level with the match official Jeff Crowe.
"So far we've let it go, but this might push us to take action," Saker said.
"It's been a worry for us all series long. It's disappointing that this is a post-play discussion. It is what it is."
Emotional Century
His hundred was his maiden in Test cricket against England.
It was also an poignant moment for Carey, whose father passed away in recent months. Carey's wife was emotional in the crowd as the batsman celebrated by glancing upward.
"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," said Carey.
"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm trying not to tear up. But, no, it was great."
History of Controversy
This isn't Carey's first brush with Ashes drama.
He was the keeper who famously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 series, resulting in a heated final day.
Speaking about his survival he continued: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's how the game works; fortune plays a part."
"I might have gotten away with one."
