Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Become a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.
A new term emerged a few months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, per insights from health professionals including child health specialists. Normally, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a minor who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are still being committed. The Israeli government disputes these accusations, just as it refutes everything it is implicated in. But while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, although a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, apparently, is what unity looks like.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.
A Selective Vision
Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy
The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of someone in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed harmony has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
