Investigative Photograph
A senior Russian general has been fatally wounded following an detonation in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The event occurred on Monday morning when an explosive device planted beneath a vehicle was set off, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.
Authorities indicated that one line of inquiry suggests the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. At this time, Ukraine has not issued a comment.
Scene of the Incident
Personnel have been sent to the location, which is said to be in a south district of the metropolis.
Media coverage state the blast took place in a car park near a residential building.
History of Assaults
Since the onset of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military commanders have been targeted within Moscow.
This most recent event echoes other high-profile incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a device hidden on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a Ukrainian source in the past connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are not officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.
The conflict has increasingly seen covert operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death remains ongoing.
